LUCKNOW, Nov. 11 -- A major fire broke out late Sunday night at a wholesale grocery shop and warehouse in Banthra area of Lucknow. The blaze started in the basement of a three-storey building housing Mangalam Traders, owned by brothers Purushottam and Santosh Gupta. The families, who lived on the upper floors, managed to escape safely through a neighbour's terrace. The owners have claimed losses worth over Rs.80 lakh, including grocery stock, furniture and important documents. Police and fire officials have begun an inquiry into the incident. According to officials, the fire was reported around 1.45am. Thick smoke and flames were seen rising from the basement. Hearing the commotion, Santosh Gupta alerted the family and guided everyone to safety before the fire intensified. Fire tenders from four stations Sarojininagar, Alambagh, Hazratganj and PGI were rushed to the spot. It took nearly two hours and around ten water tankers to bring the flames under control. Sarojininagar Fire Station Officer (FSO) Dharmpal Singh said preliminary investigation suggests a short circuit as the likely cause.
