FIR filed three months after Gulaothi Police Station fire
Meerut, Aug. 14 -- Three months after a fire destroyed the malkhana (property room) at Gulaothi police station in Bulandshahr district, the police have finally registered a First Information Report (FIR). The fire, which broke out on May 7, damaged years of seized items and case evidence. The FIR was filed by constable Arun Kumar. It claims that unknown miscreants set the fire on purpose. This is different from what police first said on the day of the fire. Back then, they said it was caused by a short circuit.
The long delay in filing the FIR and the change in the cause of the fire have raised serious questions. People are asking how anyone could have entered the secure malkhana without being seen. The fact that the station house officer (SHO) of Gulaothi was transferred just two days before the FIR was filed has also led to speculation.
The police have registered the case under section 326(G) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Mischief by fire, explosives, etc.) and sections 3 and 4 of the Public Property Damage Prevention Act, 1984....
