MEERUT, July 13 -- Muzaffarnagar police have registered an FIR against the X handle of a "news channel", on the charges of spreading false information using an outdated image and claiming recent violence by Kanwariyas, authorities said on Saturday. According to police officials, the image shared by the said X handle was traced back to 2024 when swift action was taken and those involved in the incident were arrested. By presenting it as a current event, the channel's social media handle allegedly attempted to mislead the public and create panic during a sensitive religious procession, they added. Muzaffarnagar SP (city) Satyanarayan Prajapat said that the Kanwar Yatra has already begun in western UP and Delhi and that the police are alert to ensure smooth conduct of the annual religious event. "Apart from the existing social media monitoring cell, four additional teams have been formed in the district to keep a close watch on social media activities," he said. The police are monitoring platforms such as X, Facebook, and Instagram, and any attempt to spread misinformation, officials said. "An FIR has been registered against the X handle of a news channel at the Muzaffarnagar cyber police station under BNS Section 353(2) (circulation of rumours or false information) and Sections 66D and 67 of the IT (Amendment) Act ," the SP confirmed....
