FIH appoints RP Singh in WC jury
LUCKNOW, Dec. 3 -- Former champions Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday slipped to fourth position in the Elite Group B of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy after facing their second consecutive defeat in the shortest format of the game, losing to Hyderabad by three wickets, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
With the win, Hyderabad topped the table with 12 points, followed by J&K with 12 points and Madhya Pradesh with eight points. Uttar Pradesh still have got three more games to play in the eight-team event, but to come up to the ladder, they need to win all the remaining matches now.
It turned out to be a poor show with willow for a strong batting side like Uttar Pradesh after being sent to bat first on Tuesday as after losing opener and Delhi-boy Abhishek Goswami, they kept losing wickets on regular intervals before being shot out for 127 in 19.2 overs. In reply, Hyderabad romped home in 17.1 overs, losing seven wickets.
Another Delhi-boy Madhav Kaushik struck the highest 37 in 31 balls with the help of four boundaries and a six. Aadardhya Yadav (23, 17b, 4x4) and stand-in skipper Aryan Juyal (18, 10b, 2x4, 1x6) were the other main run getters, whereas Rinku Singh made only 14 in 13 balls with the help of one six for Uttar Pradesh.
Hyderabad, in reply, raced to 34 in just 3.2 overs with opener Tanmay Agarwal hitting the ball hard, especially off Team India discard and one of the T20 specialist bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar. His 26-ball 43 was laced with four boundaries and three sixes. Kumar conceded 30 runs at 7.50.
However, Agarwal's departure in the ninth over with scoreboard reading 3/81 after being stumped by Juyal off Vipraj Nigam, changed the complexion of the game all of a sudden as leg spinner Nigam and left-arm orthodox spinner Prashgant Veer struck in consecutive overs to push Hyderabad back with scoreboard read 7/107 in the 14th over.
But then Mohd Afraz (13, 11b, 1x4) and N Nitin Sai yadav (10, 12b, 1x4) took the team home without being separated in 17.1 overs. Whereas Nigam finished with 3/20, Veer took 2/19.
For the second consecutive day, former champions Uttar Pradesh continued to struggle against hosts Goa in their Group D encounter of the Cooch Behar Trophy as after conceding 164-run first innings lead, they were 3/54 in their second innings, at the Sanguem Cricket Ground on Tuesday.
Skipper Bhavy Goyal (15) and Kaif Rehman (10) were at the crease at the close of stumps after the departures of opener Anmol Noushran (12), Shantanu Singh (4) and Bhavi Sharma (12) in quick succession....
