Festive surge in markets on Eid eve
LUCKNOW, March 21 -- As Eid approaches on Saturday, Lucknow has come alive with festive energy, with thousands of residents flocking to its iconic markets for last-minute shopping, indulgent food, and celebrations.
In the old city, Chowk buzzed with life well past midnight, its narrow lanes crowded with shoppers moving from one stall to another beneath strings of decorative lights. Shops selling sewaiyan, dates, dry fruits, and traditional sweets saw brisk sales, while the aroma of kebabs and biryani wafted through the air, pulling crowds deeper into the lively lanes. Shopping here was as much about the experience as the necessity. Families moved through the crowded lanes, pausing at familiar shops, exchanging greetings, and soaking in the festive atmosphere.
At Aminabad, the rush was relentless. Garment shops and street vendors reported heavy footfall as families shopped for clothes, footwear and accessories-an essential part of Eid preparations. Tailors worked late into the night to finish pending orders ahead of the festival.
"Eid shopping in Lucknow is more than just buying things-it's about the environment, the food, and the feeling," said Mariyam Siddiqui, a college student, while shopping in Aminabad.
Hazratganj also saw a steady surge, with branded outlets and local stores reporting strong sales. Jewellery, cosmetics, and perfume shops witnessed high demand, especially among women and young shoppers.
Traders across markets described this year's turnout as one of the strongest in recent times. "The response has been excellent. People are spending not just on essentials but also on gifts and premium items," said Usman, a trader in Chowk.
Street food vendors reported brisk business, with many struggling to keep up with demand. "We have been working continuously since evening, and by midnight most items are sold out," said a kebab seller. Police deployment, traffic diversions, and civic teams helped keep the markets running smoothly despite heavy rush.
As the city prepares for Eid on Saturday, Lucknow's markets once again highlight their central role in the festival, where tradition, commerce, and community converge in a vibrant celebration across its streets....
