Fear of demolition sparks protest against elevated road project
LUCKNOW, Sept. 12 -- Hundreds of residents of the Ghayasuddin Haider Canal locality staged a protest on Thursday against the UP government's proposed elevated road project which, they alleged, would lead to the demolition of scores of homes.
The protest, held under the banner of the 'Astitva Bachao-Bhavishya Bachao Andolan" (Save Existence-Save Future Movement), was organised by the Azad Samaj Party. Led by party's state secretary Aniket Dhanuk, the protesters marched peacefully toward the state assembly, but were stopped at the KD Singh Babu Stadium and detained by police.
According to local residents, the project not only threatens their homes but also jeopardises their survival and the future of the coming generations.
"This is not just about bricks and mortar. It's about dignity, rights and the future of marginalised communities. You cannot achieve development on the ruins of the poor. Bulldozers should not roll over the dreams of Dalits and the underprivileged," Dhanuk said.
The protesters alleged that the plan was being pushed without proper consultation or rehabilitation measures. Families who have lived in the area for decades said they were being forced to choose between homelessness and uncertain resettlement. They also flagged concerns over lack of transparency in urban redevelopment projects, saying vulnerable communities were often disproportionately affected.
