LUCKNOW, March 14 -- A four-year-old boy died under suspicious circumstances in the Chowk area of Lucknow late Thursday night, prompting police to register a case against his father and stepmother after the child's maternal family alleged that the couple tortured him to death. On Friday, police at the Chowk police station registered an FIR under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the complaint by the child's maternal grandmother, Sudha Kashyap. Confirming the development on Friday, Station House Officer (SHO) Nagesh Upadhyay said police sent the body for postmortem and started an investigation. The deceased lived with his father, Bhishma Kharbanda, and stepmother, Ragini, in the Chowk locality. Police said the maternal family rushed to the house after receiving information about the child's death. Upadhyay revealed that the child was being badly tortured and had visible injury marks on his body. When relatives reached the residence, they allegedly found multiple injury marks on the boy's body, raising suspicion of physical assault. The family then alerted the police.
