Farmers to now get aid for fruit bagging
PRAYAGRAJ, May 21 -- The state government has extended financial support to the fruit bagging technique under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), giving a boost to mango growers in the Prayagraj division. While the technique has been in use for the past couple of years, it will now be backed by a subsidy of Rs.25,000 per hectare for registered farmers.
Fruit bagging involves covering developing fruits with protective bags-often lined with wax paper-to safeguard them from dust, pests, sunburn, and wind damage. Last year, many mango growers in Prayagraj division adopted this method with technical help from horticulture department experts.
Officials said the results were promising, with noticeable improvement in the colour, shine, and quality of mangoes. These improvements helped many farmers fetch 1.5 to 2 times higher prices compared to the previous season.
Deputy Director (Horticulture), Krishna Mohan Chaudhary, said mangoes are cultivated across 2,100 hectares in the division, with the largest belt in Pratapgarh. The support is expected to encourage wider adoption of the technique and enhance export potential....
