Meerut, Aug. 12 -- Thousands of farmers staged a protest here on Monday to demand the government's intervention in ensuring the community a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP), clearance of pending payments and loan waivers. Gathered near the Commissionerate under the banner of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), their demonstration was marked by a 'tractor tiranga' rally and a 'kisan mahapanchayat'. At the Mahapanchayat, BKU leader Gaurav Tikait sought swift action on the farmers' demands. The protest began with farmers from several villages assembling at Meerut College. From there, they embarked on a march with their tractors. The farmers' grievances also centred on reduction in electricity tariffs and reforms in land acquisition policies....
