Family disrupts cremation, alleges dowry murder in Prayagraj
PRAYAGRAJ, June 6 -- Family members of an alleged victim of dowry death threw water on the burning pyre at Shringverpur Ghat, accusing the in-laws of killing their daughter for dowry.
The incident occurred under Nawabganj police station area in Prayagraj on Thursday morning.
As per reports, the agitated family members of the victim demanded the registration of a case against the accused.
However, the body of the alleged victim was cremated after a panchayat held at the ghat for over two hours, along with police intervention. The father of the deceased has filed a complaint against five people including her in-laws and husband, accusing them of burning her alive.
According to reports, Akanksha, daughter of Hanuman Prasad Jaiswal, resident of Sultanpur Khas in Nawabganj police station area, was married in 2023 to Shivam Jaiswal, a resident of Atrampur under the same police station.
According to the complaint, the deceased's husband Shivam, father-in-law Rajendra, brother-in-law Rahul, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law Sangeeta had started torturing her mentally and physically a few years into the marriage.
The in-laws allegedly kept demanding a four-wheeler and cash. On May 25, when the dowry demand was not met, Akanksha was allegedly burnt by pouring kerosene oil on her. When her condition became critical, she was admitted to a private hospital in Prayagraj, and later shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi as her condition worsened.
During treatment, Akanksha reportedly told her father and brother that she was burnt alive by her in-laws. She died during treatment at the hospital on the afternoon of June 3. The family brought her body back to Prayagraj on June 5. The in-laws were cremating the body at Shringverpur Ghat on Thursday morning when a member of the maternal side threw water on the burning pyre, demanding registration of a dowry murder case.
SHO of Nawabganj police station, Raghavendra Singh, said that after convincing both parties, the body was cremated. The deceased's father, Hanuman Prasad, has filed a complaint against five people including her husband. The matter is under investigation and legal action will be taken accordingly.
A 22-year-old man was brutally beaten to death when he went to meet his girlfriend in Barwa village under Mehanajpur police station area of Azamgarh on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.
The police have arrested the mother and one of the brothers of the girl, while another accused is on the run.
Soon after receiving the information, superintendent of police (City) Madhuban Singh, CO Lalganj and forensic team reached the spot, said a police officer.
The police officer said that the deceased has been identified as Amit Rajbhar (22), a resident of Ahirauli village under Devgaon Kotwali police station area. He was having an affair with a girl of Barwa village for the last four-five years. The family of the youth was ready for the marriage, but the girl's family opposed their relationship, said a police officer.
The police officer said the initial probe revealed that on Wednesday night, Amit reached Barwa village to meet the girl. The girl's family came to know about this and they caught him and allegedly beat him brutally, due to which he died on the spot.
The police took the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem and started an investigation.
Based on the complaint of the deceased's uncle, a case has been registered under section 103 (murder) against three persons, the girl's mother and two brothers. SP city Azamgarh Madhuban Singh said the girl's mother Sudami and one of her brothers Avnish have been arrested. Another accused Manish will be arrested soon.
The police are searching the CCTV footage and in view of the tension in the area, additional force has been deployed for security....
