Rudrapur, June 11 -- Police have arrested a 42-year-old man posing as a tantric on charges of rape and cheating a woman out of Rs.5 lakh in Rudrapur, officials said on Tuesday. According to SSP Manikant Mishra of Udham Singh Nagar, the accused, who identified himself as 'Rambhakt', was apprehended on Monday night while attempting to flee to Mumbai after learning that police were searching for him. The arrest followed a complaint filed by a 37-year-old woman on Sunday. The woman, a resident of Rudrapur, alleged that the man exploited her vulnerable situation after her husband, an industrial worker, slipped into a coma following an accident. She told police that she had encountered the accused while waiting for a vehicle in Rampur after the Holi festival. Introducing himself as a tantric from Rampura, the man claimed her family was under the influence of evil spirits and that a hidden treasure was buried in her home. Based on her complaint, an FIR was registered against the accused under several sections of the BNS, including section 308 (extortion), and 64-1(rape), 352 (intentional insult). htc...
