Agra, Aug. 25 -- Counterfeit medicines worth about Rs 3 crore were seized in a joint operation by the Special Task Force and the District Drug Department. The accused drug dealer was arrested. He alson allegedly offered a bribe of Rs one crore in cash to the raid team to hush up the matter. "There were strong indications and evidence suggesting that a module was operating in Agra and was supplying these counterfeit medicines all over. The additional director general (ADG) law and order at Lucknow initiated the action and a team of Special Task Force (STF) got into action," said Yatendra Sharma, inspector STF at Agra who led the team. "We had been working on clues for the past few days. When the drug dealer Himanshu Agarwal, the owner of Hema Medicos found himself cornered, he offered a bribe of Rs one crore in cash to hush up the matter and later increased the amount to Rs 2 crore finding no positive response from the team," stated Sharma. The joint team of STF Agra and the team of drug department jointly raided medical shops, godowns owned by Hema Medicos and seized counterfeit medicines worth Rs 2.43 crore from their godowns. "Beside this we have seized fake medicines worth Rs 87 lakh from a tempo transporting these medicines from godown for supply. Officials from pharma company have verified that medicines seized are fake. These medicines are of variety and include anti-allergic, general medicines and those used in different ailments," stated Yatendra Sharma. The action against fake drugs was well prepared and officials from the drug department were called from Mainpuri, Mathura, Kanpur, Meerut and Lucknow and raids were conducted in Favara market known for medicine trade in Agra.
