GORAKHPUR, July 26 -- Following chief minister Yogi Adityanath's instructions after the recent protest over basic amenities by women recruits of 26th Battalion of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) in Bichhia, Gorakhpur, facilities at the training centre have been upgraded, officials said on Friday.Four air-conditioners have been installed in the study rooms and 100 fans in the barracks. Additionally, around two dozen air coolers, water coolers and water purifiers have been installed for the convenience of trainees, officials said. A lady doctor has also been appointed to ensure routine health checkups of female trainees, according to an official statement.Niharika Sharma, a 1997-batch PPS officer, has taken charge as the new PAC commandant. After assuming office, she met with the female recruits to understand their grievances, the statement said.IG Pratinder Singh confirmed that immediate action has been taken and reforms are underway. He added that infrastructure and medical support for female trainees will be further strengthened.Earlier, additional director general (PAC) RK Swarnkar and inspector general Pratinder Singh visited the centre, heard the complaints of the female recruits and formed a three-member internal committee to investigate the circumstances that led to the protest.The protest was staged just six hours before the chief minister's scheduled visit to Gorakhpur on Wednesday (July 23) morning.
