Experts focus on strengthening safe delivery practices
LUCKNOW, April 13 -- The third and final day of the FOGSI 'Art of Birthing' Conclave 2026 centred on strengthening safe delivery practices, with experts underscoring the need for skilled management of complex obstetric cases and effective control of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH).
Delivering a key session, Dr Ashok Kumar, a gynaecologist from Delhi, elaborated on uterine kinetics and the scientific use of uterotonics during labour.
He noted that timely administration of these drugs enhances uterine contractions and can significantly reduce the risk of PPH - one of the leading causes of maternal mortality.
He stressed that adherence to protocols and proper training of healthcare providers, especially at peripheral centres, can be lifesaving in emergencies, stated a press release shared with the media on Sunday.
Addressing complex obstetric scenarios, Dr Ashish Mukhopadhyay from Kolkata highlighted the management of breech presentations, preterm labour and other high-risk pregnancies.
He said that early identification, clinical judgement and the use of modern techniques can ensure safe outcomes even in difficult cases.
He added that strengthening the capacity of doctors at community health centres can also help reduce unnecessary referrals, it stated.
Dr Preeti Kumar reiterated that the conclave aims to strengthen safe motherhood initiatives by equipping healthcare professionals with practical knowledge and skills.
Dr Seema Mehrotra emphasised that teamwork and timely decision-making are critical in managing obstetric emergencies, it added.
During the valedictory session, chief guest Dr H D Agarwal and guest of honour Dr Hemang Shah praised the initiative, calling it a signi- ficant step towards strengthening maternal healthcare services.
