Excise dept to crack down on illegal liquor service at dhabas, restaurants in Lucknow

The move follows a rising number of complaints and a recent drunk-driving incident near Ahimamau, where a speeding SUV rammed into a busy dhaba on Saturday night, sparking panic among diners.
Eyewitnesses claimed the driver had been drinking close to the spot shortly before the crash.
District excise officer Karunendra Singh said the department will act against individuals found drinking in public places as well as against any establishments serving alcohol illegally, particularly along highways and in the city's outskirts.
"We will conduct inspections at restaurants and dhabas across major roads and within city limits. If alcohol is found being served or consumed on-site with the owner's consent, strict action will be taken under the UP Excise Act," Singh said.
Residents and local activists say several area, including Hasanganj, Thakurganj, Chowk, and Hazratganj, have become known spots for late-night public drinking. While areas like Gomti Nagar remain largely in check, other parts of the city see frequent drinking in isolated and dimly lit areas.
Aditya Awasthi, a resident of Hazratganj, said enforcement used to be more consistent earlier. "Regular checks have dropped. Had they continued, incidents like this might not have happened," he said.
Singh said immediate action will be taken and both individuals and establishments violating the law will face penalties under the UP Excise Act....
