Ex-zila panchayat member arrested for murder plot
Haridwar, Oct. 14 -- Haridwar police on Monday arrested a former zila panchayat member for allegedly fabricating a story about a contract killing in an attempt to frame and defame his rivals in an ongoing land dispute. The accused, Zakir Ali, a former zila panchayat member, had lodged a complaint at the Bahadarabad police station on October 12, alleging that four persons- Javed, Yakub, Munger, and Junaid had hired three hitmen from Jalalpur and Roorkee for Rs.30 lakh to eliminate him, police said. However, during investigation, police found the complaint to be fabricated.
"It came to light that Zakir had concocted the murder conspiracy to malign the four individuals, with whom he is involved in a land dispute pending before a local court," said SSI Nitin Bisht.
Zakir offered Rs.50,000 to Khalik, Usman, Sohail, Azam, and Shajid, all residents of Roorkee, to falsely claim that they had been approached by the four alleged rivals for a contract killing. "During sustained interrogation, Zakir and his associates confessed to having fabricated the entire story," Bisht said.
