Ex-UP social welfare director held in Rs 7.95 cr scholarship scam
India, July 16 -- LUCKNOW The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday arrested former social welfare department director Mishrilal Paswan from Lucknow for his alleged involvement in a multi-crore post-matric scholarship scam dating back to 2010-12.
Paswan and other officials are accused of colluding with trustees of the Guru Nanak Education Trust, based in Roorkee (Haridwar, Uttarakhand), to misappropriate government funds intended for Scheduled Caste students, according to the press note.
The case pertains to the centrally funded Post-Matric Scholarship and Fee Reimbursement Scheme, under which 336 students enrolled in PGDM courses at the said institution were eligible for financial assistance. However, EOW said the accused allegedly manipulated documents and fraudulently disbursed funds, causing a loss of Rs 7,95,10,370 to the state treasury.
An FIR in the matter was filed on October 23, 2019, at the SIT Police Station in Lucknow, naming five individuals, including Paswan. htc...
