Ex-BHU HOD plotted attack on professor; two held
Varanasi, Aug. 14 -- A professor, along with his accomplices, allegedly conspired to eliminate CS Ramachandramurthy, head of the Telugu Department at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), who was attacked on campus on July 28. The plot was uncovered during interrogation of the arrested accused, a police officer said on Wednesday.
The conspiracy came to light after two of the individuals involved in the attack were arrested. Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Sarvanan T stated that the main conspirator behind the attack turned out to be the former head of the same department at BHU.
One of the attackers was injured in a police encounter. An illegal pistol and cartridges were recovered from his possession. The other accused was arrested in Telangana.
The injured accused, arrested near the road leading to Ashok Puram Colony opposite Satkar Hotel in Varanasi, was identified as Pramod Kumar, also known as Ganesh. Butpur Bhaskar, also known as B Bhaskar, a resident of Uttakur in Narayanpet district, Telangana, was arrested and brought to Varanasi on a transit remand.
Professor Ramachandramurthy had filed a complaint at Lanka police station, stating he was attacked with a rod by two unknown bike-borne men near Birla Ground while returning home on his motorcycle. He sustained serious injuries, including fractures in both hands, and is undergoing treatment at the Trauma Centre, BHU.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of BNS and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act. A team was formed to identify and arrest the attackers....
