LUCKNOW, June 6 -- Several programmes were organised in various institutions across the city on Thursday to mark 'World Environment Day'. In a programme organised by CSIR-NBRI and International Society of Environmental Botanists (ISEB), the chief guest was Sanjay Pathak, general manager (production) UP Forest Corporation, who delivered a lecture on 'Conservation Reserve Programme in the United States: Potential Lessons for India'. Prof Puneet K Dwivedi from Clemson University, South Carolina, was also present on the occasion. At a programme organised at IITR, Bengaluru MP and former director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences CN Manjunath spoke under the IDEA series of the institute. Besides, the Indian Railways Institute of Transport Management (IRITM) conducted a plantation drive in which ADG Sanjay Tripathi and other staff participated. The saplings which were planted included teak (sagwan), mountain ebony (kachnar), lemon, and burflower (kadamba). A plantation drive was also carried out at National PG College while Lucknow University organised a plantation and cleanliness awareness drive in the presence of vice-chancellor AK Rai. The 64 UP Battalion of NCC also planted saplings in the LU premises. At BBAU, a plantation campaign was presided over by vice-chancellor Raj Kumar Mittal, while a 'Sugandhpath' was inaugurated at Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University by vice-chancellor Sanjay Singh. The pathway will ensure visually-impaired students travel from one department to another with a sense of smell. An exhibition on 'Importance of Trees' was inaugurated at Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti Language University by vice-chancellor Ajay Taneja. Plantation drives were carried out at APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University by vice-chancellor JP Pandey and at Institute of Engineering Technology by director Vineet Kansal. An awareness programme called 'End Plastic Pollution' was organised at KGMU in the presence of UPNEDA director Inderjit Singh and vice-chancellor Soniya Nityanand. Several educational activities were conducted by Regional Science City in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment. The events included a film show on climate change, a quiz competition on 'Ending Plastic Pollution', a tree identification contest and a poster design competition. Similar events were organised at Hazratganj and Bhoothnath metro stations, while a rally was taken out by South City Women's Association. Among those present were Madhu Garg, Alpana, Seema, Madhulika Chandel and Mita. Special lectures were organised by Central Command of the Indian Army and Society for Sustainable Development on Thursday.
