EOW arrests JE in Rs 7cr embezzlement case
LUCKNOW, July 17 -- The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Uttar Pradesh police has arrested a junior engineer of UP Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (UPRNN), Jitendra Singh, in connection with a Rs 7 crore embezzlement case related to the development of tourism sites in Ghazipur district, senior EOW officials said through a release issued on Wednesday.
They said Singh was arrested from his office in Nishatganj, Lucknow. They said the scam involves the development and beautification of five tourism sites in Ghazipur district, including Paremn Shah's pond, Sewarai Chira ka Pokhara (pond), Maa Kamakhya Dham, Devkali site, and Kinaraam site, Deval.
A senior EOW official further said that the project was undertaken by the UP Rajkiya Nirman Nigam, Varanasi unit, which was appointed as the executing agency by the state government.
He said that investigations revealed that officials, employees, and contractors of the executing agency left the work incomplete and did not follow the standards, resulting in a loss of approximately Rs 7 crore to the government.
He said the Economic Offences Wing registered a case against the accused on September 12, 2017, based on a complaint filed by Avinash Chandra Mishra, joint director, tourism, Varanasi.
He said the investigation further revealed the involvement of 26 accused, including Jitendra Singh, who was then working as a deputy engineer and is currently working as a junior engineer.
He said Singh was found to have made advance payments totaling Rs 2.41 crore to various firms, which was allegedly used for unauthorised purposes.
The Economic Offences Wing team, led by Inspector Sunil Kumar Verma, arrested Singh from his office in Lucknow.
The officials stated that the accused will be presented before the Prevention of Corruption Court in Varanasi for further legal proceedings in the matter.
They said the Economic Offences Wing had filed a chargesheet against 14 accused in the Varanasi court in the matter earlier.
They said the Economic Offences Wing will continue to investigate the case and take action against other accused individuals.
They said the EOW's action is part of the state government's efforts to crack down on corruption and ensure accountability in government projects....
