JHANSI, Dec. 12 -- An engineer, accused in a scrap scam while working in the customs department (SSC grade), was found working as a cardiologist at the autonomous Government Medical College in Lalitpur, forging his brother-in-law's degree, said authorities. The matter came to fore after his sister alleged that the accused, Abhinav Singh, was not a doctor and he forged his brother-in-law Dr Rajive Gupta's documents, portraying himself as a medico. Initial probe by authorities found the allegation correct. Singh, working at the medical institute since 2023, resigned from his post on Wednesday and is absconding, they said. The woman said her husband (the real Dr Rajive Gupta) is working in a reputed hospital of the US since 1999. A formal complaint was lodged by the CMO office to the police department on Thursday evening seeking an FIR against Abhinav Singh, alleging that he has been impersonating as Dr Rajive Gupta on the basis of forged documents, which surfaced after his sister lodged a complaint. District magistrate Satya Prakash constituted a three-member committee with ADM, CMO and principal of the medical college as members, to verify facts for further action. CMO Dr Imtiaz Ali said, "Preliminary investigations have pointed out that Dr Rajive Gupta, 55, has been working in the cardiology department of the medical college since its inception in 2023. Prior to this, he worked in the district hospital for a year. On Wednesday, a woman approached saying she is the sister of the doctor whose real name is Abhinav Singh and he is working in the name of her husband, a qualified doctor working in a hospital in US." Abhinav Singh, a B Tech, was earlier working in customs department in SSC grade. Here, he was caught in a scrap scam, after which he was absconding, sources revealed. He gave himself a new identity of Dr Rajive Gupta, and since 1999, had been working at various places, including Mathura refinery. In Lalitpur, he was known as a big socialite mixing with people frequently. Records show that Singh had forged his bank documents, PAN as well as Aadhaar card. Earlier he had indicated Talabpura, Lalitpur, as the address, but later in 2022, he changed it to Khurai district in MP. Additional SP (Lalitpur) Kaloo Singh said the allegations against Singh are being probed. The accused, whose degrees were challenged by the woman, was appointed by the district health society at the Lalitpur district hospital in 2022 where he worked for one year before joining the medical college. Official papers reveal Dr Gupta as a resident of Talabpura area of the city while his parents are Tilak Kumar Gupta and Shakuntala Devi. As per government records, Dr Rajive Gupta holds a degree of MD from Aligarh Muslim University. But the woman claimed that Abhinav Singh forged his brother-in-law's documents, portraying himself as Dr Rajive Gupta. The matter came to fore after a property dispute erupted within the family in which the accused tried to acquire the entire ancestral property while relinquishing the rights of his three sisters. According to officials in the state government, a certificate of registration is required when a doctor starts practice in a state, and in this case, the state medical faculty in Lucknow is the place of registration.
