Energy minister showcases U.P. strides at regional meet
LUCKNOW, June 7 -- Uttar Pradesh energy minister AK Sharma on Friday showcased the state's unprecedented strides in the power sector at the regional power ministers' conference for the northern region, chaired by Union power minister Manohar Lal Khattar in Chandigarh.
Addressing ministers and senior officials from nine northern states and the Centre, Sharma said U.P. has consistently met peak power demands of over 30,000 MW for four consecutive years-the highest in the country. The state's generation capacity has surged from 5,100 MW in 2017 to 8,500 MW in 2025, with the recent addition of 3,960 MW thermal capacity inaugurated by the PM.
Transmission infrastructure too has seen exponential growth. Substation capacity has increased fivefold since 2017 to 2,00,000 MVA, while transmission line length has grown nine times to over 62,000 circuit km.
U.P. leads nationally in implementing the Centre's flagship schemes, including RDSS for power distribution reforms and the green energy corridor projects. Sharma noted that GEC Phase-2, involving 4 GW of green transmission capacity, is underway, while GEC Phase-3 for 17 GW across 2,200 km has already been proposed.
