VARANASI, June 1 -- The Varanasi Nagar Nigam (VNN) launched a drive to remove encroachments on drains using bulldozers, collecting Rs 2 lakh in fines over two days, public relations officer Sandeep Srivastava said on Saturday. On Friday, the campaign began in Varunapar Zone under Zonal Officer Jitendra Kumar Anand, where nearly 200 metres of tiles laid over a major drain near Nadesar were removed. The civic team collected Rs 1.25 lakh from violators during operations in the Varunapar, Sarnath, and Adampur zones. Encroachments were removed from areas including Nadesar to Bhojubir and near Chhavimahal. The campaign continued on Saturday, with bulldozers deployed again. A fine of Rs 75,000 was collected during the second day's operations. Structures over drains were demolished in the Sarnath and Adampur zones, covering stretches from Pahadia Chauraha to Ronabella Road and Golgadda to Adampur Police Station. Municipal commissioner Akshat Verma has instructed all zonal officers to issue notices for the removal of encroachments on drains. If not cleared within the given timeframe, demolition will follow.
