Varanasi, June 1 -- Uttar Pradesh finance and parliamentary affairs minister Suresh Khanna on Saturday appealed to people to follow the ideals of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar in their daily lives. Khanna was speaking as the chief guest at the Panchayat Representative Conference organised by the district panchayat, Varanasi, on the occasion of Lokmata Ahilyabai's 300th birth anniversary, held at the Rudraksh Convention Centre. Highlighting various facets of Maharani Ahilyabai's life-as a daughter, wife, mother and queen-Khanna said she set high moral standards through her service and devotion. "She built dharamshalas, dug wells, constructed inns, and actively opposed the sati system, making significant contributions to social reform. She was also a great devotee of Lord Shiva," he added. Khanna said everyone should emulate her ideals. He also noted that the current government, since coming to power, has initiated the celebration of occasions like Veer Bal Diwas, Constitution Day, and Devi Ahilyabai's birth anniversary. htc...
