Rudrapur, Dec. 4 -- An elderly couple was found dead in separate room of their house in Halduchaur area of Nainital district on Wednesday morning, with the police prima facie suspecting it to be a case of suicide. Halduchaur police outpost in-charge Shankar Singh Nayal said, "We reached the spot around 8.30am on Wednesday and found no suicide note in either of the rooms where the bodies were recovered. Prima facie, we found no signs of foul play; however, we are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death." According to police, the couple had dinner together on Tuesday night before going to their respective rooms, as was their routine. When neither of them appeared on Wednesday morning, their son went to check on them and found his father hanging from the ceiling. His mother was also found hanging in her room. He raised an alarm after which neighbours rushed to the house and informed the police. Police took the bodies into custody and sent them for post-mortem examination. A neighbour, requesting anonymity, said, "He was a well-known businessman dealing in building materials. For some time, he and his wife had been under stress due to heavy debt. They might have taken the extreme step because they were unable to repay lenders." Nayal said that the couple was known to be soft-spoken and respected in the locality. "No complaint had been lodged by the relatives of the deceased till Wednesday evening," he added. Police await more details about the cause of death to further investigate the case....
