Eight held in Agra for running international cyber-fraud network
Agra, Nov. 26 -- Eight individuals allegedly involved in a cyber-fraud network were arrested from a hotel in Agra on Tuesday, where they had gathered for a meeting. During interrogation, the accused confessed to working on a commission basis for kingpins based in other countries. Their primary role, according to police, was to provide bank account details that were used to circulate funds obtained through cyber frauds targeting innocent victims.
The arrests were made by the cyber cell team of Agra, led by additional commissioner of police (ACP-Cyber) Aditya Kumar, who briefed the media on Tuesday. "We acted on an input that these cyber criminals were assembling for a meeting at a hotel in Agra. Eight of them were arrested. Among these, two have previous criminal cases under cyber laws in different districts and were involved in opening mule accounts for use by cyber fraudsters," said ACP Aditya Kumar.
Police recovered 42 ATM cards and 11 cheque books from the accused. According to ACP Kumar, two to three of the arrested individuals were in direct contact with foreign-based kingpins and admitted to receiving a 2% commission on the fraudulently obtained money. They were also paid for arranging bank accounts used to rotate illegally acquired funds.
A case has been registered at Tajganj Police Station under Sections 318(4) (cheating), 111(3) (organised crime), and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of BNS.
During interrogation, one of the accused, Ranveer, told police that he regularly updated a handler in Bhilwara and received a 2% commission in return. Another accused, Devendra, stated that he had travelled to Dubai to learn the methods of cyber fraud and later began operating from Delhi. Those arrested include Ranveer Bhargava (Delhi), Saurabh Chaudhary (Aligarh), Anuj (Auraiya), Chiranheev Sharma, Rahul Kumar, Ajay Kumar (all from Agra), Devendra Pratap Singh and Dhruv Nath Pratap Singh (Prayagraj).
