New Delhi, June 21 -- The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday withdrew a summons to a senior advocate and issued a directive curbing such actions, hours after an association of Supreme Court lawyers sought action by the Chief Justice of India (CJI). The lawyers had asked CJI Bhushan R Gavai to take suo motu cognisance of the agency's move against senior advocate Pratap Venugopal, calling it a grave infringement on the independence of the legal profession.
The ED later in the day issued a circular telling officers to not issue summons to any advocate in violation of lawyer-client privilege, saying any exception would have to be approved by the agency's director. P9...
