Early therapy, family support vital for autism care: Experts
LUCKNOW, April 3 -- Early signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) typically appear in childhood, including lack of response to one's name, poor eye contact, delayed speech, and repetitive behaviour, experts said at an awareness event held at Balrampur Hospital on Thursday.
The programme was organised to mark World Autism Awareness Day (April 2), according to a press release issued to the media.
Hospital director Dr Kavita Arya said parents should remain alert to such symptoms, as early diagnosis and intervention can significantly improve a child's development and independence. "Though autism has no complete cure, timely therapy, special education and family support can help children become self-reliant," she said.
Chief medical superintendent Dr Himanshu Chaturvedi noted that affected children often have delayed or absent speech, limited social interaction and may show distress when routines are disrupted.
Medical superintendent Dr Praveen Kumar Srivastava described autism as a neurodevelopmental disorder requiring sustained behavioural and psychological therapy.
He emphasised the role of speech, behavioural and occupational therapies, along with parental care and reduced screen time.
Students of the nursing college also staged a role-play highlighting behavioural patterns of children with autism, presenting the subject in a sensitive and accessible manner....
