Drunk bus driver mows down two, crashes into shop; one dead
LUCKNOW, June 9 -- A tragic road accident in Mohanlalganj on Sunday morning left one person dead and another critically injured after a speeding UP Roadways bus ran over two pedestrians before hitting an electric pole and crashing into a roadside grocery shop, police said.
The incident took place around 8:00 AM on the National Highway near Bindowa Cut towards Gaura.
According to Mohanlalganj police, the bus first hit Umesh Goswami (50), who was on a bicycle, and Ramdevi (38), who was walking on foot. The vehicle then struck an electric pole, which broke on impact and slightly reduced the bus's speed. Despite this, the bus rammed into a grocery shop.
The collision caused panic among passengers, with around 20 people jumping out and fleeing in fear. Locals rushed to assist the injured and alerted police. "Both victims were immediately taken to CHC Mohanlalganj. Ramdevi was later declared dead at PGI Trauma Centre, while Umesh Goswami remains in critical condition," said Rajnish Verma, ACP Mohanlalganj.
"Initial investigation suggests the bus driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. He has been taken into custody along with the conductor. A medical test is being conducted to confirm alcohol consumption," said SHO Mohanlalganj Dilesh Kumar Singh.
A formal complaint has been filed, and an FIR is being registered, he added....
