Drive to target 'prasad' vendors near temples
Lucknow, June 9 -- Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) has announced a citywide campaign targeting 'prasad' (sacred food) vendors operating near prominent temples here. The drive will focus on verifying food licenses and creating awareness about hygiene and the quality of the offerings given to devotees.
The initiative follows a row over the quality of prasadam at the Tirumala temple in Tirupati in September last year. In response, FSDA had conducted a registration campaign to bring vendors here under the licensing system.
"Most vendors near temples were issued licenses during an earlier drive, but systematic collection and testing of prasad samples never really took off. That is something we are addressing now," a senior FSDA official said .
As part of the latest campaign, FSDA teams will carry out inspections at religious sites and ensure that every vendor has a valid food safety license. Simultaneously, an awareness drive will be carried out to educate vendors about food quality standards....
