LUCKNOW, July 10 -- Panic and anger gripped localities in Para here after dozens of dead fish surfaced in a temple pond allegedly due to the deliberate poisoning of the water body on Tuesday evening, several said. Locals accused officials of apathy and demanded urgent action. Eyewitnesses said several quintals of dead fish were removed from the pond at Budheshwar Temple. Also, a stray dog died allegedly after it fed on a poisoned fish. Three empty vials, which were suspected to have contained the poison, were recovered from near the pond. While police reached the site soon after being alerted, the municipal team reportedly arrived there more than 15 hours later. An FIR has been registered against the incident at the Para police station, said station house officer Suresh Singh Neha, the president of Fairy Tales Foundation located in the area and a witness to the incident, condemned the act and raised serious questions about the lack of surveillance. "There are no CCTV cameras, no security guards. How can someone dump poison and no one notices?" she said. The pond, which spans 2 to 2.5 bighas, holds religious significance, especially during the holy month of Sawan when large numbers of pilgrims visit the temple every Wednesday. Locals said they regularly feed the fish and help maintain the pond. Residents demanded that instead of relocating surviving fish to another pond, the water should be cleaned and the aquatic life preserved on site.
