Dowry dispute turns fatal as woman allegedly made to drink acid
Meerut, Dec. 22 -- In a disturbing case from the Subhash Nagar area of Bareilly, a married woman, who according to her father was pregnant, died after allegedly being forced to drink acid, with grave allegations leveled against her husband and members of her in-laws' family. The woman's father has registered a murder case against her husband and eight others at the Subhash Nagar police station.
According to the complaint, Chedalal, a resident of Parothi village in the Nawabganj area, told Subhash Nagar station house officer Jitendra Singh that he had married his daughter Pooja to Manoj, a resident of Shanti Vihar in Subhash Nagar, only eight months ago. He stated that he had spent around Rs.6 lakh on the wedding.
Chedalal alleged that after Pooja went to her matrimonial home, her husband Manoj, father-in-law Ramdayal, mother-in-law Shanti Devi, elder brothers-in-law Munish Kumar and Rakesh Kumar, sister-in-law, and sister-in-law Shivdevi began harassing her over dowry. The accused allegedly demanded Rs.1 lakh in cash and a Bullet motorcycle. He further alleged that when Pooja became pregnant, her mother-in-law and sister-in-law assaulted her.
Chedalal told the police that on December 17, Pooja called him and informed him that her in-laws were threatening to make her drink acid if their dowry demands were not fulfilled. After receiving the call, he tried to contact Manoj and his father, but they refused to speak to him. Later, after midnight on Thursday, a police sub-inspector informed Chedalal over the phone that Pooja was in a critical condition and had been admitted to a private hospital. When Chedalal reached the hospital, Pooja told him that her husband and in-laws had forcibly made her drink acid over the dowry dispute.
Subhash Nagar SHO Jitendra Singh said that on the basis of Chedalal's complaint, an FIR has been registered against the accused. Police teams are conducting raids to trace and arrest those named in the case, and further investigation is underway....
