Doctor electrocuted in RNT college hostel
Udaipur, June 20 -- A doctor was allegedly electrocuted on Thursday while using a water cooler at the hostel of the Ravindranath Tagore (RNT) Medical College in Udaipur, people privy to the matter said, adding that the incident triggered a strike by resident doctors of the college who demanded resignation of administrative officials for allegedly ignoring prior complaints.
Dr Ravi Sharma (35), had recently arrived in Udaipur and was staying on the fourth floor of the Dilshad hostel with his cousin, Dr Prashant, who said that Ravi was about to join Maharana Bhupal Singh Hospital.
"Dr Ravi was my elder uncle's son. He was posted at the CHC in Kherwara and had also been an active part of 'Operation Sindoor' during which he served in Jaisalmer as part of a medical team from Udaipur. He had come to Udaipur just two days ago as he was about to join a new posting at MB Hospital."
Prashant said the incident happened around 1.30am. "I was on night shift duty. Around 1.30am, Ravi got up to drink water. When he touched the water cooler, he received a powerful electric shock and collapsed. Nearby resident doctors heard his cries and rushed in to give CPR. He was immediately taken to the emergency ward, but unfortunately, he was declared dead around 3am."
Ravi hailed from Makrana in Nagaur district and was the father of two daughters.
Following the incident, all resident doctors at RNT Medical College expressed deep anger and grief over what they called gross negligence by college authorities. The doctors launched a strike and staged a massive protest outside the principal's office, demanding the resignation of administrative officials responsible for ignoring prior complaints.
Dr Vipin Mathur, Principal of RNT Medical College, addressed the protesting doctors and said, "We are awaiting the postmortem report to determine the exact cause of death. All of you are well aware of the procedures involved. Therefore, I request everyone to resume their duties at the earliest."
Dr Devendra, president of the Resident Doctors' Association, stated, "This tragic incident could have been prevented. Dr Ravi Sharma had completed his post-graduation and was ready to begin his duties in Udaipur. We are boycotting all duties today in protest. If our demands are not met, we will continue with the strike. We demand that those responsible accept their accountability and step down. The decision regarding the postmortem will rest with the family, and we stand by them fully."
He said there had been repeated complaints in the past about electric current leaking from the same water cooler, but no action was taken by the administration.
Resident doctors are now demanding that the postmortem be conducted by a medical board, and a representative from the resident doctors should be included in the process....
