Lucknow, April 27 -- A late-night drive turned deadly in the Kaiserbagh area when a speeding SUV, allegedly driven by a doctor, rammed into a scooter rider and two on the pillion, before running over four people sleeping on the footpath, leaving one person dead and four others critically injured. Police said the incident occurred near Burlington crossing in the early hours of Sunday. The SUV, driven by Dr Washid Saeed-an intern at a reputed medical institute in the city-first hit a scooter from behind, killing the rider on the spot and injuring two others on the pillion. The deceased has been identified as Sushil alias Sonu, 25 , a resident of Alambagh. After the collision, the SUV went out of control, veered off the road, and mounted the footpath, where it ran over four labourers who were asleep. At least six persons sustained grievous injuries and were rushed to Balrampur Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Police personnel from Kaiserbagh station reached the spot shortly after receiving information and took the driver into custody. The SUV has been seized. Station House Officer, Kaiserbagh, Anjani Mishra confirmed that the accused, Dr Washid Saeed, has been arrested and is being questioned. "We are investigating the exact circumstances." In a complaint lodged at Kaiserbagh police station, Jagdish Chandra Mehra, employer of the victims, stated that three youths-Sushil, Suraj Kashyap, and Hemant Sahu, all around 25 years old-were on the scooter near Ratan Square around 3 am when the speeding SUV, bearing a Chhattisgarh registration number, hit them. "Sushil died on the spot and Suraj, along with Hemant were admitted to Balrampur hospital, and later shifted to KGMU where their condition is critical," said the police. Police said a case has been registered and CCTV footage from the area is being examined. "The labourers on footpath who sustained injuries were identified as Nomaan, Adil, Ijaz and Abdullah .
