Do not publish minute details of suicide, media urged
LUCKNOW, Sept. 10 -- A sensitisation programme was organised by the department of psychiatry, King George's Medical University (KGMU) with media personnel on "Responsible media reporting of suicide" on Tuesday, on the eve of World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10).
"A person gives indications before opting for suicide. There are behavioural changes, feeling low, remaining aloof, earlier suicidal attempts are the few indications. It is the responsibility of society to counsel, divert his/her mind, motivate and give hope to such people", said Dr Mohita Joshi, assistant prof in the department of psychiatry, KGMU.
She further said that more than 7,20,000 people die by suicide annually across the world. A life is lost every 40 seconds.
In India, NCRB data says that 1,70,924 people die by suicide. The percentage of suicides committed is 73% in developing countries, which includes India too, she added.
Additional prof Sujeet Kumar Kar said that the data which is collected by police indicates that 34,18,480 have attempted suicide, but WHO says that the data of suicide atempts is three times more than this, as every case of suicide is not reported to the police. HTC...
