LUCKNOW, Nov. 20 -- Lucknow divisional commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant exposed the poor quality of an under-construction road in Chinhat Ward II by digging a pothole using his shoe heel on Wednesday. The incident, witnessed by officials and residents, triggered immediate action against the contractor responsible for the work. Following the inspection, the LMC imposed a Rs 50,000 fine, effective November 15, on the contractor for negligence. LMC also debarred him for one year, blocking his participation in future municipal projects. An FIR is being lodged at the local police station under relevant sections, an LMC release read. The LMC immediately deployed its team to remove the weak portions of the road. Pant visited the Vikalp Khand road section under Chinhat Ward II following repeated complaints from locals about the quality of recently laid roadwork. Chinhat Ward II corporator Shailendra Verma earlier on November 15 inspected the site and "caught the issue," highlighting that the contractor was using substandard material. Verma had also reported that workers were attempting to pass off incomplete patchwork as final construction. Verma's complaint prompted the divisional administration to initiate a field inspection, leading to Wednesday's action. Area residents gathered during the inspection and expressed frustration, claiming that the road started breaking even before completion.
