Discarded clothes in relief kits claim sparks protest
Kanpur, Aug. 24 -- Distribution of relief kits to families displaced by recent floods in the sadar tehsil of Hamirpur district sparked protests on Saturday after recipients claimed that the packets contained old clothes and slippers instead of essential food items.Eyewitnesses said agitated villagers gathered in large numbers at the tehsil premises, flung the kits on the ground, and accused officials of mocking their plight. Many claimed that revenue officials had issued them slips entitling them to a kit but no supplies were forthcoming. Tempers frayed when the distribution of the Hindustan Lever kits began and villagers alleged that only discarded clothes had been packed. Police personnel intervened to restore calm....
