Diabetes, hypertension can be controlled with lifestyle changes: Expert
LUCKNOW, April 18 -- Diabetes and hypertension can be effectively controlled through a simple routine of diet, exercise and medication, experts said at a public health session. They urged people not to view these conditions as life-ending, but as manageable with the right approach.
Speaking at a session organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), Dr Mayank Somani said one of the biggest myths is that diabetes and high blood pressure cannot be controlled. "Both conditions can be managed with a simple formula-diet, exercise and medicine. Patients themselves can take charge of their health," he said.
Dr Somani also addressed the misconception that gym workouts cause increasing heart attacks. He first cautioned that uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension can lead to thickening of blood and clot formation, increasing the risk of heart attacks. Referring to increasing cases of sudden cardiac arrests reported during or after gym workouts, Somani clarified that "Exercise is not the cause. The illness already exists in the body. If someone with undiagnosed high cholesterol or heart issues exercises and faces complications, it is due to the underlying disease, not the gym," he said.
The session was held at Hotel Clarks Awadh.
