Dhruv Jurel's focus on Vijay Hazare after India omission
LUCKNOW, Jan. 10 -- Uttar Pradesh keeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel has been on song in the Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day tournament. His 558 runs, with two hundreds and four fifties, at a strike rate of 122.90 places him joint third in the list of most run-getters.
He is only behind Karnataka's Devdutt Padikal (640), Vidarbha's Aman Mohkade (637) and level with Himachal's Pukhraj Mann (558). The 24-year-old also has eight catches and four stumpings.
Jurel has established his white-ball proficiency in the last few seasons. Although he is an IPL regular, he has so far been only a back-up option for India. He has played nine Tests and four T20Is and is yet to play in ODIs. However, his contributions have got Uttar Pradesh closer to regaining Vijay Hazare, having shared the title with Tamil Nadu in 2004-5.
"I'm enjoying my cricket right now and want to score as many runs as I can," Jurel said on Friday, a day after hitting his second List A hundred, a 93-ball 123, against Bengal to seal UP's qualification as Group B topper by winning all the seven games. In the quarter-finals, UP will face Saurashtra in Bengaluru on Monday.
Jurel was part of the ODI squad for the recent home series against South Africa, but didn't get a game. He was not picked for the white-ball series against New Zealand starting on Sunday and missed out on selection for the T20 World Cup.
"My job is to do my best for my side and currently I am focusing on my next match, a quarterfinal against Saurashtra in a couple of days," Jurel said. "For me, every match is an opportunity to make my case strong, and I am determined to give my best."
However, the player from Agra has established himself in domestic cricket as well as for Rajasthan Royals in IPL.
"He (Jurel) has been in wonderful form, and with the bat and gloves he has proved his worth to be part of the India team in future," former India player and UP coach Gyanendra Pandey said.
Jurel was in fine touch in red-ball cricket before the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He hit centuries in both innings for India A in the second unofficial Test against South Africa A in Bengaluru, after scoring a century in the Ahmedabad Test against West Indies. However, the form didn't translate into runs in the home Tests against South Africa, which India lost 0-2.
For India A, he scored 132* and 127* and was named Player-of-the-Series in the two-match series. He has a first-class tally of 2,175 runs at an average of 53.04.
For a state rich in talent yet seeking trophies, Jurel provides leadership and firepower, complementing players like opener Aryan Juyal. With international experience, he elevates UP's domestic stature along with players like Kuldeep Yadav and Rinku Singh, who is leading the Vijay Hazare side....
