Dhami asks officials to strengthen sport infra, fast-track varsity work
Dehradun, Oct. 7 -- Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday directed officials to strengthen Uttarakhand's sports infrastructure and encourage wider youth participation in sports. Chairing a review meeting of the Sports department, he stressed the regular maintenance and effective use of infrastructure created during the 38th National Games, alongside organising regular competitions across the state.
Dhami asked officials to expedite work on the proposed Sports University in Haldwani and the Women's Sports College in Lohaghat, saying these projects would provide high-level training facilities and give the state a new identity in sports.
The chief minister also called for holding competitions from the Panchayat level up to the Chief Minister's Championship Trophy to boost youth enthusiasm. He directed the Sports and Youth Welfare Department to support youth preparing for Agniveer recruitment.
Highlighting preparations for the 39th National Games, Dhami said better training, timely awards, scholarships, and insurance benefits should be ensured for all athletes. He urged the involvement of the private sector and corporate world in developing sports infrastructure.
Dhami emphasised the need to appoint experienced coaches and expedite the setting up of various sports academies. "Our government is committed to promoting a sports culture in the state and channeling youth energy in a positive direction," he said. At the closing ceremony of the Uttarakhand Premier League 2025 in Dehradun on Sunday evening, Dhami said Uttarakhand is now recognized for its world-class sports infrastructure, with national and international competitions being hosted in the state. He said under 'Sports Legacy Plan' 23 sports academies will be established in eight major cities, training 920 athletes and 1,000 other players annually.
The CM added that the government's new Sports Policy provides out-of-turn jobs to medal winners, alongside schemes such as the Chief Minister's Sports Development Fund, Sports Incentive Scheme, Emerging Players Scheme, and Sports Kit Scheme to encourage budding athletes.
Dhami on Monday also chaired a review meeting of the Sports Department in Dehradun.
The chief minister added that the state government is honouring the abilities and achievements of athletes through the "Uttarakhand Khel Ratna Award" and the "Himalaya Khel Ratna Award."
He said the implementation of the 4% sports quota in government services also ensures that the hard work of players receive proper opportunities and respect.
Dhami emphasised that the basic mantra of success is strong resolve. He urged young players to adopt this principle, set clear goals, and work with full dedication to achieve them....
