LUCKNOW, July 18 -- A low-pressure area over southwestern Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh intensified into a depression over southeastern UP on Thursday, leading to heavy rainfall in parts of the state, with the highest recorded in Prayagraj at 46.2 mm. According to the meteorological department, the depression is expected to move west-northwestward through southern UP and northern Madhya Pradesh over the next two days. This movement may lead to a break in rain activity on Saturday. "A warning for moderate flash flood risk is issued for Hamirpur, Jhansi, Jalaun, Lalitpur and Mahoba," Atul Kumar Singh, senior scientist at Lucknow meteorological station, said. He added that as the rainfall pattern shifts towards western UP, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, light rain may occur in Lucknow and eastern UP on Friday, while Saturday may see minimal rain activity. Rainfall was reported across several parts of southeastern and adjoining UP. After Prayagraj, Ballia recorded 21.1 mm, Bareilly 17.2 mm, Agra 14.3 mm, Jhansi 11.6 mm, and Gorakhpur 11.2 mm. Lucknow received 5.8 mm of rainfall during the same period. So far, eastern UP has received 230.8 mm of rainfall, 13% below its average of 265.2 mm.
