Bhopal, Oct. 1 -- Six children died of renal failure within a month in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district allegedly after consuming contaminated cough syrup, officials said on Tuesday, adding the district administration has banned the sale of two cough syrup brands. District collector Sheelendra Singh has also issued an advisory for parents, doctors and medical practitioners. "The water in the affected village was tested and no infection was found. Similarly, blood samples of children were taken and no active infection was found. The biopsy reports suggest that kidney failure may have been caused by a drug. The cough syrup administered to the children was allegedly contaminated with diethylene glycol," Singh said. The first suspected case was reported on August 24, when a child from Parasiya village complained of high fever and cold. The first death occurred on September 7 due to kidney failure. On Tuesday, the collector convened a high-level meeting and issued an order banning sale of two cough syrups.
