GORAKHPUR, May 23 -- Cross FIRs filed by a relative of the state minister for rural development Vijay Laxmi Gautam and the mahant of Hanuman Mandir, Rajesh Narayan Datt, have sparked tension in Deoria, prompting authorities to remain on high alert. According to additional district magistrate Jainendra Singh, the conflict stems from an old land dispute involving a 3.10-acre plot near the Hanuman Mandir in Deoria, close to the paternal residence of the state minister. A demarcation of the disputed land was carried out by revenue officials on Monday following an application by the Mahant's advocate. Tensions escalated when Pardeep Kumar, Gautam's nephew, allegedly began constructing a boundary wall on the site. This led to a confrontation with Mahant's advocate and his supporters, resulting in a heated exchange and a scuffle. The Mahant's group allegedly forced labourers to halt construction. The Mahant filed an FIR on Wednesday against 50 unidentified individuals, accusing them of assaulting his advocate. In response, on Thursday, Pardeep Kumar also lodged a counter FIR, naming three individuals and accusing 50 others of attacking him and his workers.
