Lucknow, July 13 -- A wanted criminal with over 36 cases against him was arrested by Alambagh police after a brief encounter late Friday night. The accused, Satyendra Kumar Nishad alias Kalia ,36, was shot in the leg after he opened fire at police officers while trying to escape, according to a police press release on Saturday. Police said they recovered a country-made pistol (.315 bore), two live bullets, an empty shell, a stolen gold chain, and a motorcycle with a fake number plate from the accused. Nishad was wanted in a recent chain-snatching case that happened on July 3 near Deepak Kite Centre in the Baraha area. He was also named in a case under Sections 304(2) and 317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Acting on a tip-off, police tried to stop Nishad near Langra Gate as he attempted to flee through TN Bajpai Chowk. He fell from his bike and fired at the police. In response, the team led by Inspector Subhash Chandra fired back, injuring him in the leg. He was taken to Lokbandhu Hospital for treatment. After the arrest, police registered a new case against Nishad under Sections 109(1), 318(4), 338, 336(3), and 340(2) of the BNS, along with Sections 3/25/27 of the Arms Act.
