Meerut, Dec. 25 -- A Vigilance team on Wednesday arrested inspector Mahendra Singh, posted with the Hapur Crime Branch, red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs.4 lakh on Rohta Road in Meerut. The inspector was accused of demanding the money to remove the names of two accused from a murder case registered in Baghpat. According to the complaint, Lokesh Baisla, a resident of Gotkha village under the Khekra police station area in Baghpat, said that in 2021 he had purchased around two bighas of land from a fellow villager, Richhpal. A few days after the land deal, Richhpal's body was found hanging from a tree in the village. Subsequently, Richhpal's family lodged a murder case against Dhara Singh, Manoj, and Ajay Pal. About ten days after the registration of the case, the investigation was transferred to Hapur. The Hapur Crime Branch is currently probing the murder, with inspector Mahendra Singh serving as the investigating officer. Lokesh alleged that inspector Mahendra demanded Rs.4 lakh to remove the names of Ajay Pal and Manoj from the case. Following the demand, Lokesh approached the Vigilance department and lodged a formal complaint. Acting on the complaint, the Vigilance team laid a trap and apprehended the inspector while he was allegedly accepting the bribe money on Rohta Road. It was reported that the inspector has a residence on Rohta Road itself. SP city Ayush Vikram Singh said that the Vigilance team is in the process of registering an FIR under Prevention of Corruption Act against inspector Mahendra.
