Meerut, Dec. 25 -- A businessman here was allegedly threatened with the murder of his family after he refused to pay an extortion demand of Rs.1 crore. Police have arrested the businessman's cousin and his female accomplice in the case, even as the key accused is said to be in Malaysia. In his complaint, Vipin Jain, who is originally from Baghpat district and lives and runs a hotel in Meerut, lodged a complaint alleging that the extortion and threat call was made on December 15. The caller identified himself as Rahul, and threatened to kill Jain's family if he approached the police, Jain, a retired army personnel, said in his complaint. Technical surveillance revealed that the extortion call was made from Malaysia. Further analysis of the call detail records led investigators to the mobile number of Jain's cousin, Pravesh alias Chhotu from Shraddhapuri. Acting on this lead, police arrested Pravesh and his female friend Jyoti from the Nangla Tashi on Tuesday. Both were produced before a court and sent to judicial custody, superintendent of police (City) Ayush Vikram Singh confirmed.
