GORAKHPUR, Dec. 12 -- A fast-track court in Basti on Thursday ordered a 10-year rigorous jail term for two men accused of allegedly transporting a large stock of cough syrup bottles. Additional Sessions Judge Vijay Kumar Katiyar also directed each convict to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh, with an additional year of jail if the amount is not deposited. The matter was decided in nine months. Government Advocate Mirtunjay Upadhyay said the accused, Ahmar Khan, 27, and Ramzan Sheikh, 23, of Balrampur district, were held by the Government Railway Police on March 23 from platform no 1 of Basti Railway Station during a special checking drive. Police questioned them on suspicion and allegedly recovered multiple cartons of the banned syrup. Special public prosecutor Utkarsh stated, "The court has set an example by delivering a strong and timely verdict. Codeine syrup smuggling is a serious offence under the NDPS Act, and such strict punishment will act as a deterrent."
