VARANASI, May 16 -- An elderly couple died after being run over by a truck on the Varanasi-Shaktinagar Marg near the collectorate turn in Loddhi, under the Robertsganj police station area. The victims, identified as Amrit Urao,75, and his wife Mantorni Devi ,70, both residents of Kachnarwa village in the Kon area, were riding pillion on a motorcycle driven by their 30-year-old son Dharmendra. According to police, the family had visited Mission Hospital in Robertsganj for an eye check-up for the father. They were en route to the collectorate for some additional work when the accident occurred. A police official stated that as they were crossing the road on the bike, a truck struck them from behind, causing the couple to die on the spot. Their son, Dharmendra, was thrown from the vehicle and sustained only minor injuries. Police sent the bodies for post-mortem examination at the district hospital. The truck driver fled the scene; however, the vehicle has been seized. The accident sparked public outrage, with a group of locals blocking the road in protest. Police managed to pacify the crowd and restore traffic flow. Circle officer (city), Dr Charu Dwivedi, confirmed the deaths and said that Dharmendra is undergoing treatment at the district hospital. She added that an FIR would be lodged based on his complaint. In a separate incident in Jaunpur district, four police personnel, including sub-inspector Pratima Singh, were injured when a speeding pickup vehicle struck their patrol motorcycles in the early hours of Thursday. The incident occurred on the Kerakat-Jalalpur road near Chawari Bazaar under the jurisdiction of Jalalpur police station. According to officials, the unidentified vehicle, travelling from Jalalpur towards Kerakat, hit two separate police bikes and fled the scene. Sub-inspector Pratima Singh, posted as the in-charge of the Parauganj outpost, along with constable Shyam Prakash Verma, was seriously injured in the second collision. She has been admitted to the BHU trauma centre for treatment. Head constables Devendra Kumar and Arvind Singh were injured in the first hit-and-run and are currently being treated at a hospital in Jaunpur. Their condition is reported to be stable.
