VARANASI, Nov. 8 -- Four people, including two women, were arrested for duping people in the name of fake marriage, in Myorpur area of Sonbhadra. The women are mother-daughter duo. One of the arrested women used to pose as a fake bride and cheat people, police said. Police said the accused have been identified as Rani Kumari, 23, resident of Supachua, Myorpur police station, Sonbhadra, Maya Devi, 50, Krishna Maurya, and Ravi Ranjan Maurya, 26, a resident of Mundisemar, Windhamganj police station, Sonbhadra district. The three accused were arrested on Thursday, whereas one Krishna Maurya was arrested on Friday. During interrogation, the arrested accused revealed that they operate as an organised gang. Gang member Krishna Maurya, through his associates, contacted the prospective groom's family for marriage, extorting a large sum of money from them. Afterwards, the woman accomplice (Rani), posing as the bride, robs him of his belongings and jewellery. In most cases, the victims are from distant states and are hesitant to file a complaint due to distance or hesitation, allowing the gang to easily escape, said the police. The accused admitted that they had committed a similar crime on October 29, and were on their way to Robertsganj to sell the stolen jewellery. The loot amounted to approximately Rs.1.5 lakh, most of which was in the possession of Krishna Maurya. Based on a complaint filed by a victim, Ramesh Kumar of Jalore in Rajasthan, through the IGRs portal, a case under sections 316(2), 318(4) of the IPC was registered at Myorpur Police Station. The evidence obtained during the investigation and after the victim's statement, other sections were added to the charge, said police.
