Copper wire worth Rs 37 lakh stolen from rapid rail project site
Meerut, May 20 -- In an ongoing Rapid Rail project, thieves made off with copper wire worth approximately Rs 37 lakh from a construction site between Rithani and Partapur stations in Meerut.
The stolen wire measuring around 805 metres was reported missing on February 12, but police failed to act for nearly three months.
The theft took place during the night of February 11 and was promptly reported to Bharatiya police station by the company responsible for cable installation. However, no First Information Report (FIR) was lodged until the matter was taken up with senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vipin Tada.
Hansraj Gurjar, the safety officer for the contractor company, said the team discovered the missing wire during a routine inspection. "We informed the local police immediately, but no action followed. Only after approaching the SSP did the case move forward," Gurjar stated. Following the intervention of the SSP, police finally registered an FIR under section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against unknown persons.
An investigation has since been launched. Station in-charge Dileep Bisht confirmed the registration of the case and said efforts are being made to identify the culprits. "We are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area. The suspects will be tracked down and arrested soon," he said. The incident has raised concerns over the security arrangements at vital infrastructure project sites and the apparent apathy of local law enforcement, with observers calling for greater accountability in handling such high-value thefts....
